This year, the London Film Museum at Covent Garden is offering its visitors the chance to marvel at the most comprehensive collection of James Bond vehicles in the world. An absolute must-see for any hardcore 007 fan, these cars are gorgeous, invaluable, and presented in stunning surroundings – with a contemporary bunker kind of feel in the décor of the building, and a bold use of brightly coloured lights to accentuate the pure beauty and lines of these iconic machines.
The Bond series has been a staple of British culture since 1962, and boasts a list of 23 films – making it the longest running film franchise is in the history of cinema. This exhibition offers a charming insight into the backstage shenanigans of the actors and crews, with pictures, hand-written notes and concept art. The storyboards are particularly fascinating, and it’s a real treat to have such a personal insight to such passionate and enthusiastic filmmaking. The model miniatures bring out both childish smiles and keen interest, and the gyrocopters could evoke mischievous thoughts in even the most well-behaved of adults.
The cars, which are all the genuine models used for filming, have mostly been donated by the Ian Fleming Foundation and are in prime condition. You’ll see the Aston Martin DB5, Goldfinger’s Rolls Royce Phantom III, the archetypal Bond car, and the globally recognised Lotus Esprit S1 submersible, which so famously displayed its amphibian skills in The Spy Who Loved Me.
It’s not just cars, either – speedboats, motorbikes, various forms of light aircraft and even the Crocodile Submarine are also on display.
Tickets are priced at £14.50 for adults, £9.50 for children (under 5’s are free), and £38 for a family. Disabled access is good, carers can go in for free, and the audio tour is just £5. The nearest overground station is Charing Cross, but the LFM is also just a fifteen minute (and very scenic) walk to Waterloo. Leicester Square Tube station is also just a couple of minute’s walk away, as is Charing Cross Underground.
Function Fixers are also able to hire the LFM in all its 007 glory for private events. You and up to 450 guests can enjoy an evening reception here, all catered for by the museums on-site restaurant. The venue is incredibly flexible and can accommodate anything from a refined corporate reception with canapés and cocktails, to a lavish wedding reception with full theming and a Bond Tribute band. You have the choice as to how much of this 15,000sq.ft museum you’d like to actually use, depending on your numbers and budget – but we know where all the best spots are.
