Hotels seem to be getting bigger if the new Intercontinental Hotel at the O2 is anything to go by, but sometimes we long to find something smaller and more intimate for a short (or long) stay.  Today people are more sophisticated and discerning than ever before. Armed with internet research, social media and global exposure, we are hungry for new experiences and therefore do not want to stay in a bland chain hotel that looks the same in every location.

One of the best things that people love about boutique hotels is that each one has its own individual style and personality. For instance, many hotels are housed in historical buildings with a charm and character that no longer exists in today’s modern construction.

The small size of boutique hotels also means that owners can invest more in putting luxury furnishings and personal unique touches in every room – in fact in some hotels, no two rooms may be alike. We have selected six of our favourite hotels in the UK – we hope you like them!

Seaham Hall, Durham

seaham2

Seaham Hall is a five-star boutique hotel in County Durham. Situated amidst 37 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens, in a striking cliff top location with evocative views out over Durham Heritage Coast.  As a guest you are invited to luxuriate at the tranquil 44,000 sq.ft. Serenity Spa, the perfect environment to relax and escape the complications of the modern world. With a 20 metre pool, outdoor hot tubs, a hydrotherapy pool and therapists trained to deliver a variety of treatments that encourage relaxation and a state of well-being, a visit should be a priority.

Seaham Hall has 20 of the most luxurious suites ranging from Junior Suites to the outstanding Penthouse Suite which offers stunning uninterrupted coastal views. Each suite has its own individual style and character, some offer private outdoor gardens or terraces and all have spectacular garden or sea views.  Definitely worth a visit!

Zetter Townhouse, EC1

Set in quirky Clerkenwell, this hotel is one of our favourites. Each and every one of The Zetter’s 59 boutique hotel rooms have been individually designed in a quirky vintage-modern style, with state-of-the-art in-room entertainment and technology, a dedication to cozy comfort and an almost obsessive attention to detail. In addition to these amazing rooms, the Zetter also has two spaces that can be hired for meetings and events.

Jesmond Dene House, Newcastle

jd

This is Newcastle’s only privately owned boutique hotel and we love it!  Comfortable and uncluttered, their 40 bedrooms are individually designed to help you relax whether you’re in Newcastle for a relaxing break or for business. Colours are rich, furnishings are sleek, and there’s often a surprise – a window seat, a leafy view, a private terrace. Splashes of silk and velvet add a dash of luxury.  Jesmond Dene is in the city, yet in the country: ten minutes to the north of Newcastle city centre, it feels as if it is in the country. It overlooks the wooded valley of Jesmond Dene, the famous green lung of Jesmond, one of the city’s most attractive residential areas.

Salthouse Harbour Hotel, Ipswich

salt

If you love the sea, then you will adore this boutique hotel.  Sitting on the vibrant quayside of Ipswich Marina,  the sea-salted brickwork exterior has been restored & rejuvenated into a ship shape contemporary warehouse of rich modern interiors and rooms adorned with vintage furniture, sculptures and eclectic art. Within its comfy chic décor although the mood is friendly and relaxed, the staff are professionally attentive to your every need.  The hotel also has an amazing collection of modern art and has been voted as one of the world’s top art hotels.

Old Rectory, Hastings

home

This is a fab B&B establishment in the Old Town of Hastings.  All eight guest rooms have been designed with luxury and relaxation in mind. With their unique characters, each one is individually and stylishly furnished. There are two cosy lounges and an honesty bar for guests to enjoy.  If you ever find yourself in this part of the world, then we strongly recommend you try it.

Barnsley House, Gloucestershire

barn

Last but not least, we have this wonderful hideaway hotel in the Cotswolds  Barnsley House is your very own (fully staffed) country house set in extensive landscaped gardens near Cirencester in Gloucestershire. The Hotel has a dedicated spa, private cinema and 18 large and luxurious bedrooms to choose from.  This house has a no under -14’s policy, to ensure complete tranquillity for your visit.
