Can you believe it’s been almost four weeks since Easter? Four weeks since that extra long weekend? In case you’d forgotten, there is an extra bank holiday on Monday to celebrate Mayday, so here is a list of unique bank holiday weekend events to fill these fantastic three days ahead. All of the events features this weekend are 2 or 3 day celebrations to mark the start of the summer calendar and most of them are free – bring on the sun!
If I lived near Devon, I’d definitely be taking my family to Brixham this weekend for the Brixham Pirate Festival. This is a free, three day event, with performances centred around two stages, one a Family stage. With re-enactors, sea shanties and a lively atmosphere, this promises to be a really memorable way to spend the bank holiday. Fingers crossed the weather holds.
If you’re heading West over the border into Wales there is a three day folk music festival starting on Friday at the stunning Wales Millennium Centre. Calan Mai marks the start of the summer season at the WMC and features folk musicians from around the world. This is another free event and an opportunity to get out and about over the long weekend.
Another quirky event that’s caught our eye, also in Wales but this time in the North, is the Victorian Extravaganza in Llandudno. Another free to attend three day event, this sees the seaside town transformed with fancy dress, parades of stream engines, a fun fair and acts appearing throughout the weekend. Acts that appear are varied and not all on the Victorian theme so there will be something for everyone to enjoy, with marching bands, salsa music and pole dancing gymnasts some of the acts that caught our eye!
And finally, if you’re visiting London this weekend or just fancy checking out one of the awe-inspiring London Olympic venues in all it’s glory, why not bag yourself some tickets to the Diving World Championships at the Aquatic Centre in Stratford? Starting on Friday this is an opportunity to view some world class athletes in an incredible venue. Tickets are available for all three days, one to consider if the weather isn’t all we expect it to be!
