Ask anyone at Function Fixers and we will tell you in no uncertain terms that the right venue can make or break your business event or conference. To get the best results out of your meetings, event spaces need to be chosen with plenty of care and intelligence – often a standard function room or regular corporate venue just won’t do your event justice.
And although a hotel or purpose built conference centre may seem like the easiest and most obvious choice, a unique or unusual venue can be a much more inspiring environment, leaving your delegates with a positive, lasting impression of your event.
Luckily, there’s never been a more varied selection of non-standard venues available. As the events industry has grown over recent years, we’ve seen the demand for unusual event space skyrocket, and venues all over the land have responded with off-the-wall, quirky and sometimes totally bonkers hire spaces that may just be what you need to give your event the edge.
We’ve put together four types of unique venues for your consideration.
Often set in spectacular surroundings, historical venues can create a superb backdrop for corporate events and meetings. From London’s Jewel Tower in the heart of Westminster to the grandeur of Leeds Town Hall or the splendour of the Manor by the Lake in rural Gloucestershire and much more besides, these heritage venues make an interesting choice, especially if you can include a private tour or presentation on the history of the building in the event day’s schedule. Combined with gala dinners hosted in grand rooms chockfull of original features, your venue won’t fail to impress your guests and inspire your delegates.
Some of our best loved universities, schools and other educational establishments are housed in the most amazing buildings, many of which can be hired for business events. Take London’s Science Museum, for example, Pembroke College at Oxford or Warwick Arts Centre. Not only do these building impress from the outside but they’re designed with teaching large numbers of people in mind. Academic venues are typically located conveniently close to transport links, and with restaurants and bars nearby. On-site accommodation is often available too. What’s more, you’ll probably find that academic venues offer exceptional value for money, especially out of term time.
Sporting venues are a great choice for corporate events, combining both business with pleasure and perhaps a bit of prestige too. In London, why not hire event space at Lords Cricket Ground or the Emirates Stadium, or treat your delegates to extracurricular racing at Ascot or Sandown? Whether you choose a high profile venue, complete with guided tours of hallowed grounds and motivational talks by former players, or an affordable and practical venue with thousands of free car parking spaces and large purpose-built meeting areas, sporting venues could be a winner.
And now for something completely different. Did you know that you can book event space in the most unlikely places – on river boats, at the zoo, or in an aircraft hangar? Finding an out-of-the-ordinary venue will certainly give your event the wow factor and make it stand out from the competition. The Compound Birmingham is a former textile factory, the 2-deck GlassBoat Brasserie is situated in Bristol’s historic Floating Harbour and you can even hire rooms at Lambeth Palace, the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury! Many locations will offer flexible meeting spaces that you can tailor creatively for, say, a product launch or other media event, and there may be outdoor space you can use for team building and other activities.
