Samuel Whitbread, founder of the brewing business was born in the main house in 1720. In the 1890’s Trinity College Cambridge bought it with whom it remained until 1987 when it was converted to a hotel. The delightful Wineglass Restaurant and bar with views across the river, offers a relaxed and informal dining experience. From August 2010, the menu at the Wineglass Restaurant at the Barns Hotel in Bedford is overseen by Daniel Galmiche, a Michelin starred chef, who has worked in conjunction with the head chef at the hotel to create inspired, delicious unstuffy food, served in a relaxed atmosphere. In the Summer there is alfresco dining on the outside patio by the river. Wine features heavily and there are 40 wines available by the glass, which have been handpicked.
The contemporary riverside bar is the ideal place to unwind. Open from mid-morning to late evening, it offers a wide selection of refreshments as well as bar snacks. Seating is available both inside and outside by the picturesque riverside. A lovely setting to enjoy Afternoon Tea.
For the more energetic, guests at the Barns Hotel also have free access to the Oasis Beach Pool and Images fitness facility @ Oasis Leisure Centre, only a few minutes away.
There are three flexible conference rooms at the Barns Hotel, all with natural daylight that can accommodate up to 35 people. There is also the stunning old Tithe Barn, dating back to the 13th Century, with a traditional timber frame and a maximum capacity of 120, which makes a fantastic venue for events and celebrations.
The hotel is close to a wide range of attractions, such as Woburn Abbey and Safari Park and the RSPB Nature Reserve. Within a 25 mile radius are the towns of St Neots, Milton Keynes, Luton, Wellingborough, Northampton and Stevenage. Bedford Railway station, 2 miles from the hotel, takes from 15 minutes to London Luton Airport, which is 29 miles away, and from 40 minutes to London St Pancras International Station.
