Opened in autumn 2012, Siemens’ £30m centre for urban sustainability is located in the Royal Victoria Docks. The Crystal, a striking glass-faceted structure built as a permanent showcase for sustainable technologies, offers its state-of-the-art 270-seat auditorium for conferences. The venue, which uses solar power, has a range of light-filled meeting rooms and breakout areas catering for groups of eight to 70 people. Additional areas include a 150-capacity atrium ‘street’ between the auditorium and exhibition, as well as a café and restaurant, with locally sourced food by Sodexo Prestige. Receptions can be held in the main exhibition space and tours can be built into event programmes.
The Crystal has been designed to be one of the most sustainable buildings in the world. It is aiming for top LEED and BREEAM scores – the most stringent standards for sustainable design and construction.
The Crystal is an all-electric building that uses solar power and ground source heat pumps to generate its own energy. That means no fossil fuels are burnt to power the building. The Crystal showcases state-of-the-art technologies that support sustainable city living and also profiles Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio, the largest and most comprehensive in the world.
The building incorporates rainwater harvesting, black water treatment, solar heating and automated building management systems. The design of the building’s structure, including its glass, provides additional insulation and takes energy efficiency to a new level.
It also features charging stations for electric cars and will be part of the Source London charging network.
